remains unchallenged after 18 consecutive years and this year’s all-day gig is

Brisbane artist, Kelly
Hussey-Smith has been selected as the Overall Winner of the
churchie national emerging art exhibition – one of Australia’s
richest emerging art awards. At ‘the churchie’ opening and
awards night (June 11), Kelly, a recent graduate of the Queensland College of
Art, Griffith University who majored in Photojournalism, received the $15,000
cash prize, sponsored by Brand+Slater Architects. Read more…
Two like-minded Brisbane artists with individually distinctive
painting styles, who have been friends for 17 years, are holding a joint
exhibition, Interior Dialogue (July 6 - 18, Graydon
Gallery, New Farm). Kerry Holland paints “portraits and lyrical
abstracts” and describes her work as “idea, metaphor, texture, symbol and
colour”. Jennifer Long’s practice is “more detailed and
realistic” and her art is “more grounded in the earth regarding colour, detail

Brady left school at 16 and has never studied art. A finalist in
the churchie national emerging art exhibition (2007 and 2009),
the self-taught artist has exhibited extensively. His latest collection,
Paintings From the Kitchen Floor, will be exhibited at Circle Gallery,
West End (Brisbane), from February 6 – 10. Read more… For 20 years, Brisbane artist,
Wendy Allen, has played a key role in art education in
Australia and internationally. Now she is showing her own work in an exhibition
at Graydon Gallery from October 28 – November 8, 2009. The Island –
No Ordinary Obsession is the culmination of keen observation in
the field, intensive research and creative interpretation, carried out over
several years. The focus of her attention is King Island - a tiny island off
Cleveland, in Moreton Bay (east of Brisbane), which serves as a stage for human
theatre as the artist portrays the creation and destruction of human
relationships and the role-playing performed to make relationships

Brisbane artist, Jennifer
Long’s 2009 exhibition, Sojourner, captures
vignettes of everyday life in Paris and Venice during winter. These quiet,
reflective works showcase Jennifer’s eye for detail, colour, texture and
sculptural, patterned form. And the human presence suggests something unseen,

Brisbane artist, Warren Palmer’s latest
exhibition, Memories Are Made of This, is a collection
of 40 “wall and floor pieces” – oil paintings, limited edition prints of his
original work and mixed media sculpture – about his experiences in life: “where
I’ve been and what I’ve done”. Thoughtfully presented as an installation, these
new works are the culmination of 30 years of artistic endeavour. Palmer’s oils
are narrative, tongue-in-check portrayals of relationships and the game of life,
as observed by the artist, and they are rich in symbolism. At Graydon Gallery

The Australian Open Polo Championships
2008 is the largest annual high goal polo event in the southern
hemishere and attracts players from the UK and Argentina where polo is the
national sport. The championship finals are on Sunday 12 October (2008)at

Australia, where it is one of the most rapidly increasing cancers. The main aim
of World Lymphoma Awareness Day 2008 (15 September), is to

Blue Bamboo is the
first solo painting exhibition by Donald Blue, a Caucasian who
paints in the Chinese style. He trained with masters in Taiwan and Japan, has
studied Zen Buddhism, learnt the traditional wet mounting process at the
National Palace Museum in Taipei, and had a successful career as a potter in the
US before taking up the brush. He has adapted his style to the Australian
vernacular – painting grass trees, the Bunya pine and the Glasshouse Mountains.
Donald is president of Brisbane’s oldest art group – the Half Dozen Group of

Art stimulates conversation and
contemporary Brisbane artist, Kathryn Brimblecombe-Fox,
believes art has a role to play in creating world peace. She will
investigate the connection between peace and art at a workshop at the University
of Queensland’s Australian Centre For Peace and Conflict Studies on October 16.
This coincides with her latest exhibition, Prayers For The
Planet: We are all the same which opens on October 12 at Doggett
